Extension to the furlough scheme

The Chancellor has today announced that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (“Scheme”) will be extended for four months, until the end of October 2020.

There will be no changes in relation to how the Scheme is run between now and the end of July 2020.

Between August and October 2020 the Scheme will be continue but it will be modified to allow more flexibility. The Chancellor has mentioned that employers will be asked to ‘start sharing’ the cost of the Scheme and that furloughed employees will be able to work part-time. However, full details of the modified Scheme are not yet available. It is envisaged that these will be published by the end of May 2020.

We would also take this opportunity to remind you to keep the agreement you have with employees under review and ensure any extensions to an employee’s furlough leave are documented in writing.

We will of course keep you updated with any material developments, however if you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with a member of the team.
