Why diversity and inclusion matters to me

Diversity and inclusion are not just words or workplace initiatives to me—they are values that shape how I believe people should be treated, supported, and celebrated every day.

Diversity is about recognising and respecting our differences. Inclusion is about making sure those differences are welcomed, valued, and never used as a reason to exclude someone. Together, they create a safe place where people can show up as their full, authentic selves without fear.

Everyone deserves to feel safe at work. For many people, especially those within the LGBTQ+ community, this hasn’t always been the reality. Too often, workplaces have been places where people felt they had to hide parts of who they are to be accepted or taken seriously.

A truly inclusive environment is one where no one feels they have to edit themselves to fit in. Where pronouns are respected, identities are affirmed, and differences are embraced. When people feel safe, they thrive and when people thrive, so do teams and the businesses they work in.

Supporting the LGBTQ+ community is a vital part of inclusion. It means actively creating environments where sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are respected and protected. It means listening, learning, and standing up against discrimination, even when it’s uncomfortable. Inclusion is not about special treatment; it’s about equal respect and opportunity.

One of the most powerful tools we have is education. Many biases come from misunderstanding or lack of exposure, not malice.  Education opens conversations. It challenges stereotypes. It gives people the language and confidence to support one another better. When we take the time to learn about experiences different from our own, we grow—not just as professionals, but as human beings and we can take that quality into every aspect of our lives.

Different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and experiences spark creativity, innovation, and deeper connection. When we celebrate what makes us different, we build environments where everyone has something valuable to contribute.

For me, diversity and inclusion are ongoing commitments. They require intention and action. They mean speaking up when something isn’t right, which our active bystander training has taught us and really listening when someone shares their lived experience.

I believe that when we create inclusive and supportive spaces, we don’t just improve the workplace we change lives positively and that is why diversity and inclusion will always matter to me.
