Many people are unaware that a routine activity like driving a motor vehicle can lead to more fatalities than both murder and terrorism combined. This is shocking when the majority of road deaths and injuries can be prevented by obeying traffic laws and acting more responsibility on the roads.
On 1 August 2024 National Road Victim Month commenced. This is an important campaign which was founded in 1988 by Roadpeace, the national charity for road crash victims.
Moore Barlow as members of RoadPeace are proud to support the campaign that highlights the staggering number of people needlessly killed and injured in crashes on the UK’s roads.
We want to remember all who have lost their lives prematurely or been injured in a crash, but we want their memories to be the motivation for bringing an end to all preventable cruel road deaths and injuries, so that we do not have new victims to remember in the future.
Brigette Chaudry – RoadPeace President and Founder
National Road Victim month enables us to honour the incredible work of the emergency services who respond to road crashes every day and to acknowledge the mental and physical impact that this has on them and to show our unwavering support for the many road crash victims and bereaved families who has suffered the tragic loss of a loved one in a road crash.
Moore Barlow encourages road crash victims and bereaved families to reach out to RoadPeace via their national helpline. RoadPeace can be contacted on 0800 160 1069.
Shocking statistics
- Every day in the UK, five people are killed and around 80 are seriously injured, on average, in road collisions
- Since records began in 1926, over 500,000 people have been killed in UK road crashes – far exceeding the 375,000 UK citizens killed due to warfare during the same period
- The routine daily activity of driving results in more fatalities annually in the UK than both murder and terrorism combined
- In 2022 alone, 1,766 people were reported killed and 141,560 people were reported injured in collisions on UK roads
The History of RoadPeace Wood
The RoadPeace Wood has been planted at the National Memorial Arboretum, in Staffordshire, in memory of all those who have been killed in our roads.
Every year on the second Saturday of August (10th August 2024) during National Road Victim month, a ceremony of remembrance is held at RoadPeace Wood.
The National Memorial Arboretum was founded by David Childs as a place where the lives of people could be remembered by living trees that would grow and mature in a world at peace. It is a 150-acre site on the edge of the National Forest at Alrewas, Staffordshire.
RoadPeace Wood is part of this memorial with trees that are individually sponsored to remember those who have lost their lives or been injured because of a road crash.
We are very grateful to Moore Barlow for supporting National Road Victim Month 2024 and for helping RoadPeace to raise awareness about the many needless deaths and injuries that occur every single day on our roads.
Nick Simmons, CEO of RoadPeace
We are proud to be a part of the RoadPeace campaignand to assist in raising awareness of the preventable deaths and injuries that happen on our roads every day.
