World Sight Day, 10th October 2024 is an annual day used by various charities and organisations to raise awareness of sight loss and visual impairment and confirm the importance of eye health and eye care.
As a medical negligence firm, we have acted for many sight loss clients who have brought successful claims as a result of delays in diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as glaucoma. We have also used those cases to seek to make changes that may bring about improvements in NHS ophthalmic services nationally.
Legal claim for blindness set to bring about real change in NHS service delivery.
However, it is also worthwhile reflecting on some of the positive outcomes we have come across such as assistive technology and support from local charities whilst acting for sight loss clients.
One such client, Bob, who achieved a settlement last year, has hugely benefited from assistive technology that has allowed him to remain in work as a research archaeologist and feel valued undertaking meaningful work, despite his severe visual impairment. He has also felt empowered to reach out to other sight loss archaeologists across the UK.
Moore Barlow have also sponsored a trainer from Southampton Sight, which is a brilliant local charity that supports people living with sight loss, to deliver a training programme for Sight Loss Nurse Advisors in collaboration with the local hospital and local authority. This training is delivered by visually impaired members of the charity and seeks to provide patients and their families with much needed practical and emotional support.
And finally, we were honoured to take part in some ‘blind baking’ with Southampton Sight to get a real feeling of the limitations and difficulties faced by people living with sight loss. Thank you for inviting us!
