First black senior partner at top 100 law firm re-elected

In 2021, Trevor Sterling of Moore Barlow made history by becoming the first black senior partner to be elected to a top-100 law firm. Today, he makes history again by being re-elected for a second term.

Trevor, who was uncontested for his second term, said, “It’s an honour to be re-elected. Anyone who knows me will have heard me say, ‘Don’t just aspire to climb the ladder. Be the ladder.’ I’m proud to be at a law firm that shares this value and leads the way in diversity and inclusion.

“I want my position to inspire other solicitors and law firms. Lack of diversity breeds a lack of diversity, and we must start to see representations of wider society in all workplaces, not just the legal sector.”

Trevor has almost four decades of experience in the legal sector, leading on high-profile cases such as the Wimbledon school crash incident, where he’s representing 20 of the families affected, the victims of the Westminster attack in 2017, and the Croydon tram crash victims.

Moore Barlow’s executive leadership team comprises a female chair, Helen Goatley, and Ed Whittington, the youngest managing partner appointed to a top-100 Law Firm.

Congratulations to Trevor, who is an asset to Moore Barlow and a natural leader. His re-election is a testament to our people-first approach, which guides our culture and values.

Ed Whittington – Managing partner

We’ve worked hard to be the firm we are today, and we’ll continue to lead the way. I’m proud that we were the first firm to have a black senior partner, yet it’s concerning that still today, it is still extremely rare to find a black person at senior leadership level in a top-100 law firm.

Helen Goatley – Partner & Chair

Compared to the national average, where women in the legal sector make up 22% of equity partners, Moore Barlow leads the way with 58% female partners.

In the first re-election since the firm merged four years ago, Trevor will continue his duty to oversee the firm’s operations across its six regional offices in Southampton, Guildford, Woking and Lymington, as well as its two London locations in Richmond and the City.
