Update an address for service at the Land Registry

All owners of registered property will have an address for service on their property’s Register of Title at the Land Registry. This address will be used by the Land Registry if it issues a notice or sends any other correspondence. Also, as the Register of Title is a public record, it may be used by other third parties who need to contact the owner.

Other persons may have an address for service included on Registers of Title. Examples of this would be a person named in a restriction whose consent/certificate is required as well as beneficiaries of unilateral notices.

It is very important to keep the address for service up to date and the process for doing this is straightforward as detailed below.

How to update an address for service

A property owner can apply to change their address for service independently using Form COG1 which is available to download online from www.gov.uk. This form will require a recent passport photo and evidence of identity to be included with the application.

Alternatively, a conveyancer can apply on behalf of the property owner. This application would not require a photo or any ID evidence but the conveyancer may need to see some proof of the new address so that they can confirm this to Land Registry.

There is no Land Registry fee for updating an address for service.

Types of address for service

  • Land Registry will need at least one valid postal address but can enter up to three addresses for each person.
  • The address for service does not have to be within the UK.
  • A DX address or an email address can also be added as a secondary form of contact by request to Land Registry (this must be in addition to a postal address).
  • A ‘care of’ address can be used as a valid address for service.
