Top tips for attending your first court hearing

Family Law Moore Tips – Feature 01

Attending your first court hearing can feel overwhelming, being prepared and understanding what to expect can help you feel more confident and at ease. Here are our top tips to help you feel ready for your first court hearing;

Know the date, time and location

  • Ensure you know exactly when and where your hearing will take place.
  • Your solicitor is likely to tell you to arrive in advance of your hearing start time so they can discuss your case with you.

When you arrive at the court hearing

  • Each court will have security on the door. It is helpful to take minimal items with you to avoid unnecessary delay.
  • Put your phone on silent or turn it off, judges are never happy when a phone disrupts a hearing!
  • There is sometimes some delay, so do not panic if you do not go in at the time your hearing is listed for.

How to dress for your court hearing

  • Your appearance in court is important, so aim to dress in formal attire. Whilst you do not have to wear a suit, it is important to wear something appropriate and that you are comfortable in.

What you should prepare

  • Read any statements and/or papers before your hearing so that you are up to date with the facts and points being discussed.
  • It may be helpful to carry a pen and paper with you so that you can note down and questions you have.

Bring some support

  • Understandably, attending a court for the first time can be an emotionally draining experience and you may want to bring someone with you on the day. You can bring a friend or family member with you for support; however you should only bring one person.
  • It is also worth noting, that person will not be able to enter the courtroom with you but can sit with you while you wait.

Stay calm and lean on your solicitor for guidance

  • While it’s natural to feel nervous, remember that your solicitor is there to represent your interests and guide you through the process. Stay calm and trust in their expertise.
  • If at any point you feel uncertain or have questions about the hearing or your case, don’t hesitate to ask your solicitor. They are there to guide you, explain legal jargon, and make sure you understand the process every step of the way.
