About the role

What are we looking for?

This is an incredible career growth opportunity for a knowledgeable Associate who is a Planning Expert and is working in a Legal firm with a strong Real Estate reputation. We would also be pleased to consider partner level applicants with a following.

Assisting with the management of key client relationships within the whole of our Real Estate division by supporting and complying with the departmental and firm client management and business development programmes.

Moore Barlow’s Real Estate division is ranked Tier 1 by the Legal 500 and deals with high quality work from many household name clients. Our client base is the envy of many competitor firms.

Management of a case load of client matters across a broad spectrum of planning matters, including often fast-paced time-critical work, as well as non-transactional and advisory work whether individually, with appropriate supervision, or supporting other fee earners, ensuring that individual financial targets and objectives are met in line with the departmental business plan.

Drafting and advising on all kinds of planning matters including section 106 Agreements and unilateral undertakings, planning appeals, applications, planning objections, compulsory purchase, and all associated advice arising from the Real Estate division across all offices.

The role is based in Southampton and offers a flexible working approach of combining office and home working.

Key tasks will include:

Financial Management & Compliance

·       Meet or exceed fee income targets and make a profitable contribution to the department

·       Fully and accurately record chargeable and non-chargeable time, and effectively manage billing and debtors

·       Comply with and conduct the business of the Firm in accordance with the standards and procedures laid down in the Solicitors Accounts Rules (SRA), the Rules on the Professional Conduct of Solicitors and all other statutory SRA rules and regulations in force for the conduct of a solicitor.

·       Adhere to the “People” Policies and Procedures. 

Client Management and Development

·       Manage own caseload with appropriate supervision

·       Work effectively to progress matters in a timely fashion and in accordance with the requirements of the client and the pace of each transaction or matter

·       Deliver excellent client delivery providing a service based on the needs and requirements of the client, including meeting with them (where possible) on site if required

·       Promote the firm and its areas of legal specialisation to new and existing clients.

 

People Management and Relationships

·       Support other members of the Real Estate division including in relation to all transactional, non-transactional and advisory work

·       Assist in the supervision and development of more junior staff where appropriate and to take on delegated departmental tasks from partners and other senior staff

·       Take an active functional role within the department or as a minimum to be assisting others to run projects

·       Maintain regular communication with the Head of Department and other members of the Land Development Team and Real Estate Division, including in person (where possible) or by telephone or video call

·       Deliver on the firm’s values

 

Knowledge

·       Deliver a high standard of technical work

·       To contribute to the DMS strategy within the department and to participate fully in the leadership coaching programme

·       To develop, grow and maintain a strong up to date knowledge of property law through relevant publications and updates, internal ‘know how’ sessions (including participating in and delivering such sessions to the team and wider firm) and to undertake as necessary appropriate external training to comply with the CPD requirements laid down by the SRA.

 

Business Development

·       Good ambassador and actively promote the firm developing contact with others at this level in other professional firms

·       Develop an internal network of referrers and potential referrers at the firm

·       Actively support the business development activities of the Real Estate Division and firm as a whole.

·       Actively take steps to develop a network of professional contacts, potential referrers and referrers including planning consultants, commercial land agents etc.

What we look for:

• Minimum of 3 years PQE with experience of advising on all kinds of planning matters, including section 106 Agreements, planning appeals, applications, compulsory purchase, and all associated advise arising from real estate work in relation to land planning. • Must be a good team player willing to work cooperatively with others. • Good organisation with strong administration skills. • Able to produce a large quantity of work and complete tasks to strict deadlines. • Strong IT skills, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel. • Excellent internal stakeholder and client handling skills. • Enthusiasm
